Dr. Bowen is originally from Orlando, Florida. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida. After graduating Magna Cum Laude, he attended dental school at University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Bowen’s journey to become an orthodontist was a little different than most orthodontists. Most orthodontists go straight into their residency after dental school. Dr. Bowen didn’t jump right into orthodontics. He was awarded a Health Profession Scholarship from the US Army. He served on active duty for three years and two years of active reserve. He then bought a practice in Asheville, NC where he was a primary care dentist for 10 years. He practiced general dentistry until he entered orthodontic residency in 2012.
As a general dentist, he was able to explore many areas of dentistry. He discovered the areas he enjoyed most, and became more and more interested in orthodontics. This led him to pursue residency training in orthodontics. As an orthodontist, he felt he could make a great impact on others and have fun doing it. After contemplating it for several years, he decided to apply for orthodontic residency. He got accepted, sold his practice in North Carolina and entered residency in 2012. He moved to western Pennsylvania to attend a 30-month residency in orthodontics at Seton Hill University. He received a Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and a Master of Science in Orthodontics. His research “The Influence of Text Messaging on Oral Hygiene Effectiveness” was published in Angle Orthodontics.
Having been a primary care dentist running his own practice, he had a good idea what kind of opportunity he was looking for as an orthodontist. In 2015, he purchased the practice(s) of Dr. Steven Harrison. He is excited to have found such a great opportunity working with Dr. Harrison and learning from his vast knowledge and experience. His goal is to provide high quality orthodontics and more than that, make a positive impact on each patient’s life. He feels fortunate to be involved in such a great profession.
When Dr. Bowen is not straightening teeth, he is spending time with his four children, working out, mountain biking or traveling when he can. He is excited to be part of the community and hopes to build a lasting legacy for years to come.
